Chris Vervaet, recipient of CFA’s 2024 Collaboration and Partnership Award, is passionate about advancing Canada’s oilseed processing industry and the canola value chain through strategic collaborations. With nearly a decade of experience at the Canadian Oilseed Processors Association (COPA), Chris has witnessed firsthand the value chain’s unwavering commitment to representing the interests of the industry and promoting the versatile use of canola.
“At COPA, our mandate, which has remained unchanged over decades, revolves around transforming Canadian-grown oilseeds, primarily canola, into value added products like canola oil,” Chris explains, emphasizing the association’s integral role in supplying the food, feed and fuel sectors.
A significant focus of Chris’ work involves fostering partnerships that drive demand and supply of renewable fuels. His collaboration with the Canadian Fuels Association (CFA), spanning five years, stands out as a testament to this commitment.
“Our partnership with CFA is driven by a shared vision to expand Canada’s market for renewable fuels from low carbon feedstock,” Chris notes. “It’s about developing a long-term and sustainable opportunity that benefits all segments of the value chain, from farmer to fuel producer.” .”
Recently, Chris was invited by Imperial, a CFA member, to speak at their upcoming renewable diesel facility—an opportunity he views as pivotal for advocating the importance of canola in renewable fuel initiatives.
“The renewable diesel facility from Imperial underscores the growing recognition of canola’s role in renewable energy,” Chris remarks. “It highlights the impact of collaborative efforts in advancing lower carbon fuels, creating value at home, and supporting local jobs.”
Looking forward, Chris sees further potential for collaboration between the agriculture and fuel sectors, including in the research and development of agriculture feedstock that is tailored to renewable fuel production.
“Research and innovation are key,” Chris asserts. “We must explore new technologies and partnerships to meet evolving consumer demands.”
When asked about advice for those navigating collaboration, Chris emphasizes adaptability and openness to new perspectives.
