This year brought both challenges and achievements for the transportation fuels industry. As we close out the year, I’m excited to welcome Cenovus as our newest association member. I’d also like to take a moment to reflect on our shared accomplishments and extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported our work throughout the year.
Advocacy was key to our efforts in 2024. Through events, forums, and campaigns, we advanced discussions on clean fuel markets, low-carbon standards, and Canada’s potential in developing low-carbon fuels and emission-reduction technologies. The Parliamentary Fuels Forum enabled direct engagement with policymakers on industry-critical issues, energy security, and economic growth. We championed policies and initiatives to attract investment in Canadian-made low-carbon solutions, driving a sustainable energy future.
At our first-ever Innovation Forum, we explored the role of technology in driving change. Innovation and progress remained central to CFA and our members’ efforts in 2024 as the industry continued to drive a cleaner energy future. Just a few highlights include:
- Imperial Oil advancing its $720M renewable diesel facility in Alberta, scheduled to open in 2025;
- Shell Canada unveiling their Polaris and Atlas CCS projects in Alberta, expected to capture about 650,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually by 2028;
- North Atlantic investing in clean hydrogen production in Newfoundland and Labrador;
- Tidewater Renewables progressing on a 6,500-barrel-per-day SAF project in British Columbia; and
- Parkland Corporation becoming the first to produce low-carbon aviation fuel in Canada from their Burnaby refinery in British Columbia.
These and other initiatives, were featured in the 2024 update to CFA’s Driving to 2050 vision, which outlines a roadmap for a sustainable energy future. Additionally, our Fuel Forward consumer campaign raised awareness of the industry’s progress and promoted the adoption of sustainable solutions.
None of this would be possible without the dedication of our members, partners, and supporters. Over the past year, I particularly appreciated the resilience and innovation of our members and industry colleagues, the collaboration across the fuels supply chain and our work with governments to find ways to balance industry competitiveness, economic growth and environmental stewardship and the commitment and dedication of association team members as we continue to work toward a cleaner, more sustainable future together.
Looking ahead, we will continue to advocate for forward-thinking policies, drive innovation, and address the challenges before us. Together, we can create lasting positive change for the transportation sector and our communities. On behalf of the Canadian Fuels Association and members of our Board of Directors, I wish you a joyful holiday season. Thank you for your continued support—we look forward to building a stronger, more sustainable energy future with you in the year ahead.
Best of the season,
Bob Larocque
